Ima June Murphy,
92, of Uniontown, PA, passed away Friday, March 3, 2023, at Henry Clay Villa Nursing Center, in Markleysburg, PA.
The daughter of the late William H. Murphy and Almira Mae Metheny Murphy Burkholder, she was born February 15, 1931, in Bruceton Mills, WV.
In 1949, June went to Pittsburgh to work for Sun Drug Co. as a waitress at the lunch counter and soda fountain. She loved ice cream and had a good time making all kinds of ice cream treats. Her next job was in Uniontown with Bell Telephone, now Bell Atlantic of Pennsylvania (Verizon), as a switch board operator. After a year, her job was discontinued and she was transferred to Washington, PA, where she worked for a year. She then returned to Uniontown and worked as a long distance operator for 21 years. She found it interesting talking with people all over the world. To put a call through to England was a chore because their equipment was not as up to date as that of the U. S., and the call was often "cut off".
After 21 years, June's job was transferred to Pittsburgh, but she was lucky and passed a test for a job in the business office in Uniontown. She worked in the business office for 14 years and lived close enough to walk to work. After retiring, she enjoyed keeping up with her house and working in her yard and mini garden.
June is survived by three sisters: Barbara Willis and husband, Larry, Sherie Hockenberry and husband, David, and Robin Fike; her brother and his wife, Mark Murphy and Ruth Ann; sister-in-law, Dorothy Murphy; and many nieces, nephews and friends.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her stepfather, Robert Burkholder; sister, Sarah Pearl Liston; brothers, William M. Murphy and Robert F. Murphy; brothers-in-law, Junior Liston and Ed Fike; and sister-in-law, Elsie Jane Murphy.
In keeping with her wishes, June will be cremated and no services will be held.
Carl R. Spear Funeral Home in Brandonville-Bruceton Mills, WV, is assisting the family with funeral arrangements.
